How to Cut Your Screen Time Without Deleting Your Apps
FX TechPulse Editorial · November 5, 2026
Deleting every app is rarely realistic. Many of us need messaging, maps and banking on our phones. The good news is that a few settings changes can reduce mindless scrolling without giving up the tools you need.
Start with notifications
Most phone pickups begin with a buzz. Open your notification settings and turn off alerts for anything that is not from a real person or time-sensitive. Keep messages from family and calendar reminders. Mute the rest.
Rearrange your home screen
Move social media and video apps off the first page, or into a folder on the last page. The extra tap gives you a moment to decide if you really want to open it.
Use the built-in tools
Both Android and iPhone include screen-time dashboards. Check last week's report to see where the hours go, then set daily limits on one or two apps rather than all of them. Small, specific limits are easier to keep.
Try grayscale and bedtime modes
Switching the display to grayscale makes colorful feeds less attractive. A bedtime mode silences notifications and dims the screen at night, which also helps sleep.
Replace the habit, not just remove it
If you reach for your phone when you are bored, keep a book, a podcast or a notebook within reach. Notice the trigger first: waiting in line, having a coffee, or the first minute after waking up.
Aim for progress, not perfection. Even thirty minutes less per day adds up to more than three hours a week.
