The quality of an AI assistant's answer depends heavily on the quality of your request. You do not need special tricks. You need to be clear about what you want, who it is for and what a good result looks like.

1. State the goal and the audience

Compare "Explain inflation" with "Explain inflation in 150 words for a high-school student, using one everyday example." The second prompt tells the model the length, the reader and the style, so it does not have to guess.

2. Give context

Paste the text you want summarized, or describe your situation. An assistant cannot see your files or your plans unless you share them. The more relevant detail you provide, the less generic the answer.

3. Say what format you want

Ask for a table, a checklist, three options with pros and cons, or a short email. If you do not specify a format, you will get whatever the model prefers.

4. Show an example

If you want a particular tone, include a short sample and say "write in a similar style". Examples are often more precise than adjectives like "friendly" or "professional".

5. Break big tasks into steps

Instead of asking for a complete business plan in one message, ask for the outline first, review it, then expand each section. You stay in control and can correct course early.

6. Check the answer

AI assistants can state wrong information with confidence. For facts, numbers, medical, legal or financial topics, verify with a trusted source. You can also ask the assistant to list what it is unsure about.

Good prompting is mostly good communication. If a colleague would need more information to help you, so does the AI.
