Product-market fit means your product satisfies a strong demand in a specific market. Customers want it enough that they keep using it, pay for it and tell others about it, without constant persuasion from you.

Signs you are getting close

  • Retention: users come back week after week. A flattening retention curve, rather than one that falls to zero, is a good sign.
  • Organic growth: new customers arrive through recommendations and word of mouth.
  • Disappointment test: when you ask users how they would feel if they could no longer use the product, a large share say "very disappointed".
  • Sales get easier: prospects understand the value quickly and the sales cycle shortens.

Signs you are not there yet

Heavy discounting to close deals, high churn after the first month, customers who like the idea but never use it, and growth that stops when you stop spending on ads are all warning signs.

How to move toward it

Pick a narrow group of customers and serve them extremely well. Talk to the people who love the product and the ones who left, and find out why. Improve what the loyal users value and stop building features that nobody asked for.

It is not permanent

Markets and competitors change, so product-market fit has to be maintained. Keep measuring retention and listening to customers even after you find it.
