Your phone probably holds years of irreplaceable pictures. If it breaks tomorrow, would you lose them? A good backup takes a little setup, then runs by itself.

Why one copy is not enough

Phones can fall in water, get stolen or fail without warning. Even cloud sync is not always a backup: if you delete a photo on one device, sync may delete it everywhere. A real backup keeps a separate copy.

The 3-2-1 rule

  • Keep 3 copies of important files.
  • On 2 different types of storage.
  • With 1 copy stored somewhere else, such as the cloud.

Step 1: Turn on automatic cloud backup

Both Android and iPhone offer built-in photo backup services with a limited amount of free storage. Enable it, choose Wi-Fi only if your data plan is small, and let the first upload finish while charging.

Step 2: Make a local copy

Once or twice a year, copy your photos to a computer or an external drive. A drive costs little and will not disappear if you forget to pay for a subscription.

Step 3: Check that it works

Open the cloud app on your computer and look for recent pictures. A backup you have never tested may not be a backup at all.

Step 4: Clean up

Delete blurry duplicates and screenshots to save space, but only after confirming that backups are complete.

Protect your accounts

Your cloud account now holds precious data, so use a strong unique password and two-factor authentication. Add a recovery method so you cannot get locked out.

Spend an hour on this today and your memories will survive almost any accident.
