The first customers are the hardest and the most valuable. They give you money, feedback and proof that your idea works. You rarely find them with advertising. You find them by talking to people.

Start with your network

List friends, former colleagues and contacts who match your target customer, or who know someone who does. Ask for a short conversation, not a sale.

Go where your customers are

  • Online communities, forums and social groups on the topic.
  • Local events, associations and meetups.
  • Marketplaces and directories in your field.

Offer something specific

Instead of saying I build software, say I help dental clinics cut missed appointments. A narrow promise is easier to remember and to buy.

Do things that do not scale

Onboard each customer personally, write handmade emails and fix problems fast. Early on, that attention teaches you more than any dashboard.

Ask for payment early

Even a small price shows real interest. Free users give polite compliments, while paying users give honest feedback.

Learn from every conversation

Keep a simple log: who you talked to, what they said, why they bought or did not. Patterns will appear.

Ask for referrals

Happy customers know others with the same problem. Ask them for introductions.

Reaching ten customers by hand builds the foundation for everything that comes next.
