Children go online earlier than ever, for school, games and friends. You do not need to be a tech expert to help them stay safe. What matters most is staying involved.

Start with conversation

Talk regularly about what they do online. Make it clear that they can come to you if something upsets them, without fear of losing their devices as punishment.

Set up the technology

  • Use parental controls on devices, apps and the home router.
  • Choose age-appropriate content settings in streaming and gaming services.
  • Turn on privacy settings in social apps so profiles are not public.
  • Keep devices updated and use screen locks.

Teach key rules

  • Never share your address, school or passwords.
  • Be careful about talking to strangers, including in games.
  • Think before posting, because things online can last forever.
  • Be kind, and tell an adult about bullying.

Agree on family rules

Set times and places for devices, such as no screens at meals or in bedrooms at night. Rules work better when children help create them.

Watch for warning signs

Secrecy, sudden mood changes, or withdrawal from friends can mean something is wrong. Stay calm, listen, and keep evidence if needed.

Be a role model

Children copy what they see. Showing balanced and respectful use of technology is the strongest lesson you can give.
