Startup Metrics That Matter (and Vanity Numbers to Ignore)
FX TechPulse Editorial · October 19, 2026

Dashboards can show hundreds of numbers. For an early company, only a handful matter. The rest can distract you.
Metrics worth tracking
- Revenue: monthly recurring revenue for subscriptions, or monthly sales.
- Customer acquisition cost: how much you spend to win one customer.
- Churn: the share of customers who leave each month.
- Lifetime value: how much a customer pays over the whole relationship.
- Activation: the share of new users who reach the first moment of value.
- Burn rate and runway: how much cash you spend per month and how many months it will last.
A healthy relationship
A common guideline is that lifetime value should be well above acquisition cost, often three times or more. If you spend more to win customers than they bring in, growth will drain cash.
Vanity metrics
Total downloads, page views and social followers can rise while the business gets nowhere. They are fine as context, but should not drive decisions.
Make it actionable
Choose one main metric for each stage. Early on it might be the number of active users, later revenue or retention.
Keep it simple
A basic spreadsheet is enough at the start. Update it weekly, share it with your team and look at trends, not single days.
Focusing on a few honest numbers helps you decide where to put your time and money.
