Update prompts are easy to dismiss with a tap on Remind Me Later. But updates are one of the most effective security measures available to ordinary users.

What updates do

Software contains mistakes. Some of them are security flaws that attackers can exploit. When a flaw is found, the maker publishes a fix. Details of the flaw often become public, so anyone who has not updated becomes an easy target.

Beyond security

Updates also fix bugs, improve speed and battery life, and add features.

What to update

  • The operating system on phones and computers.
  • Web browsers and their extensions.
  • Apps, especially messaging and banking apps.
  • Routers, smart home devices and printers.

Make it easy

Turn on automatic updates wherever you can. Install updates overnight while the device is charging. Restart when asked, because some fixes apply only after a reboot.

Beware of fake updates

Only install updates from your device's official settings or app store. Pop-ups on websites claiming that your browser or player is out of date are common ways to spread malware.

End of support

When a product no longer receives updates, it becomes riskier over time. Plan to replace it, and avoid using such devices for banking or sensitive work.

Keeping software current takes almost no effort, and it closes doors that criminals keep trying.
