We touch our phones and keyboards all day, and they collect dirt. Cleaning is simple, but using the wrong product can damage screens and ports.

General rules

  • Turn the device off and unplug it first.
  • Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
  • Never spray liquid directly on a device.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials.
  • Do not let moisture get into openings.

Screens

Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, slightly dampen the cloth with water, or a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe if the manufacturer allows it. Avoid bleach and ammonia-based glass cleaners.

Phones

Clean the case and back with a damp cloth. Use a soft brush or a wooden toothpick carefully for dust in ports, and never use metal tools.

Keyboards

Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake out crumbs. Use compressed air in short bursts, then wipe the keys. For mechanical keyboards, keycaps can be removed and washed.

Mouse and headphones

Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, and clean ear tips according to the maker's directions.

How often

Wipe phones and keyboards weekly, and do a deeper clean monthly.

Check your device manual for specific advice. A few minutes of care keeps gadgets looking good and working well.
