The wireless earbud market is crowded, with models from under $30 to over $300. Instead of chasing the longest feature list, think about how you will use them every day.

Fit and comfort come first

The best sound is wasted if the earbuds hurt or fall out. Look for several ear tip sizes and, for workouts, a secure design. If possible, try them in a store or buy from a seller with an easy return policy.

Sound quality

Reviews describe sound as balanced, bass-heavy or bright. Pick a style you like. Support for higher-quality audio codecs matters only if your phone supports them as well.

Noise cancelling

Active noise cancelling reduces constant sounds like engines and air conditioners. It helps on planes and commutes, but costs more and can slightly reduce battery life. A transparency mode lets outside sound in when you need to hear traffic or announcements.

Battery life

Check both the hours in the earbuds and the extra charges in the case. Five to eight hours per charge is typical. Fast charging, where a few minutes gives an hour of playback, is very handy.

Calls and microphones

If you take many calls, read reviews that test voice quality in noisy places. Multiple microphones and wind protection make a difference.

Other features

  • Water resistance rating for sweat and rain.
  • Multipoint connection to switch between phone and laptop.
  • A companion app for equalizer settings and firmware updates.
  • Replaceable ear tips and good warranty support.

Our advice

Set a budget, pick two features that matter most to you, and read a few independent reviews before you buy. A well-fitting mid-priced pair often beats an expensive one that is uncomfortable.
