A good monitor is easier on your eyes and makes work more pleasant. The right choice depends on what you do most.

Size and resolution

For desktop use, 24 to 27 inches is common. Full HD (1920 x 1080) is fine at 24 inches, while 27 inches looks sharper at 1440p. 4K is great for detailed work but needs a capable computer.

Panel types

  • IPS: good colors and viewing angles, popular for general and creative use.
  • VA: strong contrast, nice for movies, sometimes slower response.
  • OLED: excellent contrast and speed, usually more expensive.

Refresh rate

Most monitors run at 60 Hz. Gamers often prefer 120 to 165 Hz or more for smoother motion. For office work, 60 to 75 Hz is plenty.

Color accuracy

Photo and video editors should look for good coverage of standard color spaces and factory calibration.

Connections and ergonomics

  • USB-C with power delivery can connect and charge a laptop with one cable.
  • An adjustable stand for height and tilt reduces neck strain.
  • A matte screen reduces reflections.

Eye comfort

Look for flicker-free backlighting and set brightness to match the room. Follow the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Match the monitor to your tasks and desk, and you will enjoy it for years.
