Selling, trading in or giving away a phone is a good way to save money and reduce waste. But if you skip the preparation, your photos, messages and accounts could end up in a stranger's hands.

Step 1: Back up everything

Save photos, contacts, messages and app data to the cloud or a computer. Confirm that the backup works before wiping.

Step 2: Sign out of your accounts

Log out of your Apple or Google account, and turn off features such as Find My Device and activation lock. Otherwise the buyer cannot use the phone.

Step 3: Remove SIM and memory cards

Take out the SIM card and any memory card.

Step 4: Factory reset

Use the erase all content and settings option. Modern phones encrypt their storage, so a reset makes the data unreadable.

Step 5: Clean and check

Clean the phone, take clear photos, and describe its condition honestly.

Where to sell

  • Manufacturer or carrier trade-in programs.
  • Reputable refurbishers.
  • Online marketplaces. Meet in a public place and avoid overpayment scams.

If it is too old to sell

Take it to an electronics recycling point or a store collection program. Do not throw batteries in household trash.

Final check

Change passwords if you ever signed in on shared devices. A careful reset protects your privacy and helps the phone find a second life.
