Wearables help many people become more active and understand their sleep. The two main types, smartwatches and fitness bands, serve slightly different needs.

Fitness bands

Slim, light and affordable, bands focus on health tracking: steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts. Battery life often reaches one or two weeks. The screen is small, and smart features are limited.

Smartwatches

Smartwatches show notifications, run apps, make payments and can take calls. They have bigger screens and more sensors, such as ECG on some models. Battery life is usually from one to a few days.

Choose a band if

  • You mainly want activity and sleep tracking.
  • You like a long battery life.
  • You prefer something light and inexpensive.

Choose a smartwatch if

  • You want notifications, maps and payments on your wrist.
  • You like to customize the watch face and apps.
  • You do many different sports and want detailed metrics.

Other things to check

Compatibility with your phone, water resistance, GPS built in or not, comfort of the strap, and the privacy policy for the health data.

A word about accuracy

These devices give useful trends but are not medical instruments. Talk to a doctor about health concerns.

The best wearable is the one you wear every day, so comfort and battery matter as much as features.
